itasca's oktoberfast 2011 5k

as i'm sure you know, dave & i became triathletes this summer.  we've been training since february and did a race in july and another in august.  at the end of august we went to see my family in georgia.  we have been back for 3 weeks now and things at the gym haven't been going well.  we haven't been in the pool since we were at my grandparent's house, and we have only been to the gym together maybe twice in those 3 weeks.  luckily, dave rides his bike 2 nights a week from home, and i have been taking ian and going to the gym during the day.  we really hoped to squeeze in one more triathlon before the season ended, but the weather in illinois has not been above 70 since we've been home...  and this is the last weekend of triathlon season... so.... guess we'll start again next year!

so.... i think it was me who had the brilliant idea... let's do a 5k!!!  it'll be SO fun!  i have ran 2 5ks in my entire life-  1.  sophomore year cheerleading camp.  2.  schaumburg triathlon.  both of these had similar results.  i'm not a runner.  i don't love it.  i don't get a "runner's high."  i don't like it.  but what will i be doing at 9 am saturday morning you ask?  running a 5k.  why?  why?  maybe it was the promise of free beer & brats after the race (wait, i don't even like beer!)  maybe it was the free goodies (those are always nice).  whatever it is, i'm crazy... and i'll be running a 5k saturday morning.  not sure if dave & i are running  together or not.  it is fun to have someone to run with, but i definitely would just be holding him back...  we'll see.  so please send luck, prayers, and well wishes this way.  i certainly need them!!!

results on monday?  yes!

just random thoughts

i keep thinking of thoughts for entries- but there's a lot going on, so i don't always have time to write. besides, my weekly to-do list update is probably getting old. here are a few things I thought about writing about, but i'm just not going to dedicate a full entry to.

1. things i am looking forward to once i'm not pregnant: wearing my regular clothes again, sleeping comfortably, although probably not sleeping well, shopping for clothes, wearing my wedding/engagement rings again, being able to squat down, bend over, see my feet, etc. But most of all- seeing/holding our sweet baby boy!

2. I've learned that you have really got to love someone to live with them when they're pregnant. So people, don't ever try to get pregnant to save your relationship. I have learned that my husband must love the crap out of me because people (or maybe it was just me) are not the most pleasant people to be around when they are growing a baby. You're moody, emotional, irrational, happy, sad, angry, etc. So bless my husband for putting up with all the mess I put him through, and all the stuff that had to be done just the way i wanted it to be. I love you.

3. I'd also like to get my memory back- because I know I had more to write about, but I am always forgetting things (and I'm always dropping things).

4. I can't decide whether the induction is a good thing or not. On one hand, I'm going to miss out on the last (and most uncomfortable from what I hear) weeks of my pregnancy, plus, I know when the baby is going to be here (or at least around when). At the same time though- I'm missing out on those last 3 weeks or pregnancy and the surprise and nervousness of randomly going into labor when my body decides it's ready to go into labor. I know a lot of people say i'm lucky that I know, but the element of surprise is something I think i'm going to miss out on!

Well, we have a busy day ahead of us. Last night after we celebrated Christmas at my in-laws we put together our new bookshelf and moved our books and dvd's around, plus I washed the last load of new baby clothes (for now) and we did some general straightening up of things.

Today we have (or should I say Dave has) put the rest of our pictures up on the wall and it will be followed by a whirlwind of errands: picking up a few baby things, packing our bags, doing a little shopping for us, a pedicure for me, finishing thank-you notes, and making sure the house is clean for everyone's arrival.

Tomorrow consists of: 8:30 at the hospital for my amnio (ugh, nervous about this), going by work to drop off my LOA paperwork, anything we forget today, spending last precious moments just us before our world amazing changes forever, and back to the hospital whenever Dr. Barthel tells us to be there to get this baby show on the road. It seems like just yesterday that the test said "YES+" and here we are almost 8 months later. It's just flown by! I can't wait to begin this new chapter in our lives together!! wow! Pin It!

It's a BOY!

My 20 week ultrasound appointment was yesterday, and as confirmed 100% by the ultrasound tech. we have a boy! This should bring much relief to all McFadden's as Dave is the only male McFadden under 30, so now there is a new heir. I would put photos up, but my scanner refuses to work. We'll have to see what I can do to remedy that.

Can I admit I wasn't thrilled for about 10 minutes? Ok, I wasn't thrilled for about 10 minutes. I had my heart set on a girl, I was sure it was a girl. People said I had a " girl belly", the heartbeat was super fast @ all my appointments- which usually means girl. I just wanted a girl. I figured I would be right. I thought for sure when I looked at the initial picture that it was a girl, and then "IT" showed up in the picture, and it was not hiding. 100% Boy is what the tech labeled the picture. I have to admit, I felt sad, and then when the tech left the room to get the Dr. I broke down...

Me: "but i wanted it to be a girl, I don't want a boy"
Dave: "Mel, you said you weren't going to do this"
Me: "I know, but I really thought it was going to be a girl"
Dave: "it's our baby, it's going to be great no matter what"
Me: "i feel like such a jerk and an idiot, don't tell anyone I was so upset" (slaps my own face as to "slap me out of it")
Dave: "everything's going to be fine, we can have all the girls you want after this"
Me: "but you're the only boy in your family, we're destined to have a girl first"
Dave: "no, my grandparents had 3 boys & a girl, my uncle had 4 girls, and my dad had 3 girls and a boy, it probably skips a generation"
Me: "I'm going to be just like my grandmother and have 4 boys"
Dave: "no, you're not"
Me: "it's all because I bought that shirt at Old Navy Monday"
Dave: "you bought that shirt?! i told you to wait"
Me: "but it was so cute, and they were almost all gone
Dave: "oh, Mel"
Me: "really, I'm happy, we have a perfectly healthy little boy"

So I got on the phone yesterday and called a billion people- doubled our used phone minutes (thankfully we have plenty) and the more I talked to people and told them, the more I was absolutely thrilled! By 2pm, I was in full baby mode! I tried to pick out bedding, we talked a little about names- very exciting stuff. We still have a ways to go, but it just seems so much more real now! We couldn't be any happier! It definitely makes me less patient b\c I'm ready for January to be here now, but I'm going to try to savor my last 4 months and make the most of every day until our little boy makes his arrival!
