mommy cooks (bakes) - oatmeal chocolate chip lactation cookies

yes, you heard it right here.  there is such thing as "lactation cookies."  not only are these cookies good for helping to boost your milk production, they're also delicious!!  they taste just like oatmeal chocolate chip cookies!  need a little boost?  give these a try!  don't need a boost?  remove the brewers yeast.  they aren't the healthiest cookies, but I am definitely planning on tweaking the recipe next time around

ingredients:
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
4 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons flax seed meal
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups oats
1 cup chocolate chips
2-4 tablespoons brewer's yeast

directions:
preheat oven to 350°.
mix the flaxseed meal and water and let sit for 3-5 minutes.
beat butter, sugar, and brown sugar well.
add eggs and mix well.
add flaxseed mix and vanilla, beat well.
sift together flour, brewers yeast, baking soda, and salt.
add dry ingredients to butter mix.
stir in oats and chips.
scoop onto baking sheet.
bake for 12 minutes.

enjoy!

  1. I make these too! I've been making them since the beginning of nursing, do they help with the milk supply, I don't know. But I do know they are delish and when we run out the hubs always asks when I'm making more. I use butterscotch instead of chocolate chips. SO GOOD!

  3. I will be trying these this week also, then! I went back to work last wednesday and have been majorly stressing over milk production! I am doing all the tricks that I have heard, ordering fenugreek today, drinking lots of water, pumping more often than before and for longer than anythng actually comes out! Here is the "recipe for success" that my mom looked up for me...

Blessed Thistle- 2 capsules 3 times per day
Marshmallow- 2 capsules 3 times per day
Catnip & Fennel Extract (increases butterfat & makes for a less colicky baby)- 1 dropper 3 times daily
Fenugreek & Tyme- 2-3 capsules 3 times per day

Avoid Parsley & Sage as they can dry up milk.

If you want to order any of these wholesale, let me know. I am placing an order for them today and for me, total it is only about $40 or 50. I was pretty impressed with that cost for all thos supplements :)

Anyway- thanks for sharing the cookie recipe.

  4. Jenni- No stress!!! I know that's hard to say, but I can tell when i'm stressed that Ian gets stressed too- and my body takes a hit!

Looks like you're doing all the right things though- Are they allowing time for you to pump at work? You're a teacher, right? You should talk to Lyn (Waddell) Blanton about pumping at work- she did it when she went back to teaching. All you need is 20 minutes every 3 hours while you're away!

Let me know how the capsules work- i'm doing fenugreek drops (i hate taking pills). If you think they really help, i might give it a try. I'm going to have to go past a year w\ Ian. It's looking like he's going to have a LOT of allergies. :(

  5. hey mcmel, i love these cookies! i will probably make them even after i am done nursing because the brewer's yeast is so nutritious. plus the can is freaking huge. i took loads of fenugreek as well during a time of intense stress and low milk production. that, combined with lots of rest and lowering my expectations regarding life in general, worked really well for boosting my supply. i hope you get to nurse ian as long as possible, it really is a blessing in many ways.

ps. sorry about your crappy experience in indiana. your photos were hilarious. we make it up to indiana at least once a year or so. both sets of our parents are native to indiana and in many ways it feels like home to both dave and me, especially since it feels like we have no real home, due to moving around all the time!
