fall wish list- coats/outerwear

because as my husband says, "you only have 7 coats, do you really need another?"  what do you think?

i could only fit into 3 of those coats while pregnant, and i'm guessing the same outcome for this winter.  so it may be time to part ways with some of those coats, and make way for some new ones... and it's now really appropriate for me to have so many coats seeing that illinois is like the arctic.  i may have made it through my pregnancy last winter with only wearing gloves and a hat most days- but i had body heat for 2.  not so much this time around.  i'm going to be cold.

here's what made my wish list!

i have to say i have really been looking for coats in gray or navy because i pretty much have them in all the other colors that i've spotted online, but didn't find a gray or navy that i just have to have.  the delias coat is closest to gray, but i'm not sure i love it.  the clifton coat is close to navy, but maybe not as deep of a blue as i desire.  i also just realized that the clifton coat and the big city blues coat are the same coat...  the orange old navy coat- i just love the color- it just makes me dream of pumpkin bars and pumpkin spice lattes and changing leaves- and i got my first peacoat from old navy over 10 years ago- and it is still going strong!  the wear the heart is jacket is more cute than warmth.  (btw, modcloth has a coat warmth scale- how awesome is that)?!  the white coats are probably my favorite- i just see them with a peek of skirt and colorful tights sticking out.

dreaming of coats... but not the weather that would necessitate one...

sick of being sick

being sick is never fun.  being sick when you're pregnant or have a newborn at home is even more not fun.  i was sick once when i was pregnant (i'm talking a cold) and i seriously thought i was going to die.  i thought i had strep, my ob's office was worried i had swine flu.  it was bad.  i had to go to urgent care, where the lady who checked me in asked me a million questions, when it was very clear that I HAD NO VOICE.  luckily, it was just laryngitis and pharyngitis and a mess of yuckiness.  i got excused from work for a week- and i spent that week wallowing in misery in my bed.  you can't really take much when you're pregnant.  i had a list of "approved medicines" but every time i would grab something and take it up to the pharmacy counter, the poor girl working behind it would just shake her head no at me.

then i got sick after i had ian.  dave's gma has been very sick for a while, so we made several trips to see her at the nursing home she is in.  nursing homes are full of sick people.  and sick people are full of germs.  i got sick, ian got sick.  it was a disaster.  i was also a new mom.  much of this sickness involved me calling my husband at work crying and telling him how miserable i was taking care of a crying baby while about to die, and he was "living it up" at work.  there's also not much you can take while breastfeeding, but it's more than you can take while pregnant.  i popped a zicam swab up my nose every 4 hours, and luckily was feeling better in a few days.  my husband got the cold a few days later, but unlike me, he got to leave work and come home and sleep all day.  who takes care of mama when she's sick?!

now i'm sick again.  you would seriously think that these pre-natal vitamins i've been taking for let's say, oh, a year would be protecting me from the icky.  but no.  i spend my days and nights hacking up a lung and thinking i have tuberculosis or the whooping cough.  pretty sure i don't have either, but then i heard a commerical on tv about whooping cough and how 83% of infants who get it, get it from family and that it can be fatal for infants under the age of 1.  of course, even if i wanted to visit my dr. now, i can't because ge's new health plan, which i like to compare to fear mongering prevents me from going to the dr. because if you go to the dr. and you're sick.  you have to PAY.  all my lung hacking has also somehow injured my hip.  seriously, how old am i?  80?

my advice for how to handle your life and being sick while having a baby.

-get plenty of rest.  sleep when your baby sleeps- at night, naps, etc.  it really does make a difference because i am cranky when i don't get sleep.  and cranky + no sleep + baby crying + sick = awful.

-hot showers or baths.  not sure they do much, but they feel nice.  sometimes as a mom it's hard to get a shower or a bath- make time!

-drink lots of liquids.  i like to alternate between hot and cold.  i try to drink lots of super cold ice water for hydration and then have lots of hot tea (i prefer mint) with honey in it.  this really does help.  hot water with lemon juice and honey helps too.

-take whatever meds you can.  there are many things you can take while pregnant and breastfeeding from natural remedies (echinacea, garlic, vitamin c, homeopathic remedies) to otc meds (delsym, robitussin).  i usually take ibuprofin, a zinc dissolvable tablet and  cough drops (be sure not to overdo it with zinc and menthol cough drops as they can cause a drop in milk).

-wash your hands as much as possible.  duh.

i'm looking to be at the end of my cold, as my husband is now officially sick (he seems to be about a week behind me).  here's hoping that you and your family are staying healthy!

Week 5

here i am with mommy. she feels like she looks like one of the girls on 16 and pregnant

here i am with daddy and his cool mug from uncle chris. very funny!

here i am smiling for my 1 month pictures that mommy & daddy took! isn't my sweater handsome?

We just wrapped up week 5, and things are pretty much still the same. Ian is currently screaming it out in his pack & play while i give him the 5 minutes of "calm down time" before i go reinsert the paci and we start this all over again. he's still having trouble with afternoon naps, so i am beginning to wonder if he's just a cat napper, or if this is just a phase. we'll see. but first, i must reinsert the paci because my dog is probably about to have a stroke. we didn't know this, but apparently he's the only one in this house who is allowed to cry...

ah, victory, but we'll see for how long. anyway, week 5. Ian becomes more and more alert as the days go by- all part of his not wanting to miss anything (i think he gets that from me). well, he was asleep, but dad came home and woke him up by clanging around. thanks dad.

also this week Ian has started to smile more often. i'm starting to think he actually may like the two of us! no laughs yet, but he's getting there as he smiles are bigger and more often!

Ian also turned a month old on Saturday, and came down with his first cold, courtesy of mommy (so much for those antibodies in breastmilk helping him to fight off colds)... that led Ian to his first time sleeping through the night! of course, it hasn't happened since then, but he has been putting up numbers of anywhere between 3-5 hours, which is really good. it means we've dropped at least 1 feeding at night, and we'll only be sleeping longer from there.

on tuesday, Ian had his 1 month check up. can i just say i'm good? i predicted Ian's weight exactly- 8 lbs, 4 oz. still a pretty small guy, but growing! 20.75 in. as well. 25% in each- so he's a well proportioned baby! next month we go for shots, but everything checked out! i knew it, he's perfect...

that pretty much leads us up to now- we're in the beginning of week 6. we'll see what it holds for us. mommy knows it holds her post-partum appointment, and she isn't looking forward to that, or being cleared to go back to work. darn you, America and your work-centric culture!
